2026 marks my 30th anniversary in franchising, and the changes I’m seeing are significant.
When I started in 1996, the typical franchise buyer was a later-career baby boomer, a married couple with still-dependent young adult children, a single-income household responding to corporate layoffs or job insecurity.
That profile still exists, but a new archetype has emerged, reshaping today’s primary franchise owner persona.

Meet Today’s Franchise Buyer
GenX and Millennial-aged couples with younger children, both spouses with similar earning power. And, driven by different motivations:
- Flexibility to participate actively in their children’s lives
- Building a family legacy their kids can join some day
- Setting an entrepreneurial example
- Diversifying income streams earlier in their careers
Aspiring Franchisees Today are the Best Prepared I’ve Seen
They came of age in economic and employment volatility, shaping them to be financially conservative and build reserves early.
Being equally educated and dual-income is a huge advantage. Living on one spouse’s income while the other launches the franchise creates a security net and larger opportunity pool the prior generation often lacked.
This is the winning strategy. One spouse stays employed while the other steps into franchise ownership full-time, maintaining family stability while building their business.
An immediate benefit is fulfilling a primary goal right away. New business owners work very hard, but are now in charge of their time and schedule. They can start blending their family and work lives into the design they desire today, not years from now.
Meet Lucy and Leonard
Lucy Mejia, Leonard Black, and their families are wonderful examples of franchisees achieving their personal and professional goals through franchise ownership.
“Owning my own business sets a powerful example to my children, teaching them the value of hard work, resilience, and pursuing one’s passions.” – Lucy

“We wanted to keep working, but create more time for our two children, both under ten. Plus, I now wake up energized to solve challenges much more than ever before!” -Leonard

Do Lucy and Leonard’s motivations mirror your own? Can you imagine yourself expressing the same enthusiasm about your life as a business owner?
If that vision appeals to you, perhaps it’s a prompting to start exploring your possibilities in franchise ownership.
